Dr Timothy Clifton is a Reader in Relativity and Cosmology at Queen Mary University of London's School of Physics and Astronomy, affiliated with the Astronomy Unit. He holds roles as Postgraduate Tutor for Astrophysics and a member of the editorial board of Classical and Quantum Gravity. His research focuses on theoretical cosmology, particularly constructing mathematical models to understand relativistic gravity and the large-scale structure of spacetime.
Clifton earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2006 and held postdoctoral positions at Stanford University (Lindemann Fellow), the University of Oxford (Jesus College Junior Research Fellow), and CERN (CERN Fellow). He joined Queen Mary in 2012 as an STFC Advanced Fellow and has since been a leading researcher in gravitational physics and cosmology.
His research interests include parameterized post-Newtonian cosmology, black hole universes, and the interplay between observational data and relativistic gravity theories. He has secured grants from the STFC, including a £1.6M award for astronomy research from 2023–2027. Clifton's work bridges theoretical models with observational tests, addressing challenges like the Hubble tension and dark energy.
He has advised numerous PhD students, though specific names are not listed here. His contributions span over 150 peer-reviewed articles, with recent focus on scalar-tensor theories, post-Newtonian constraints, and anisotropic cosmological models. Clifton remains an active participant in academic leadership, shaping the next generation of cosmologists through teaching and mentorship.
