Dr. Will Sutherland is a Senior Lecturer in Astronomy at Queen Mary University of London's School of Physical and Chemical Sciences. He leads observational cosmology research, focusing on galaxy surveys and gravitational physics. Previously, he served as Project Scientist for the VISTA telescope's design and construction. His work includes key contributions to the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2001 detection of redshift-space distortions, 2005 baryon acoustic oscillations) and current projects like the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VIKING), Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA), and SHARKS surveys. He is involved in the 4MOST instrument design for VISTA and uses GAIA data to test modified gravity theories.
Education and career highlights include postdoctoral work at Oxford on the IRAS PSCz survey and MACHO microlensing project. He joined Queen Mary University in 2007 as part of VISTA's lead institute. His research spans cosmological surveys, telescope instrumentation, and dark matter/modified gravity investigations.
Key grants include £1.6M STFC funding for UK participation in LSST and cosmological research. Active collaborations include the Centre for Fundamental Physics and international telescope initiatives.
