Professor Timothy Bates is a faculty member in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology. He holds the rank of Professor and specializes in behavior genetics, cognitive epidemiology, and personality psychology. His research integrates molecular genetic approaches to study human ability, personality traits, and their societal impacts.
Current research focuses on topics such as the genetic basis of intelligence, dyslexia, moral psychology, and group behavior. He has supervised numerous graduate students and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in psychology, including methodology, personality, and intelligence.
Professor Bates has led or contributed to over 20 funded research projects since 2007, including studies on cognitive aging, genetic influences on wellbeing, and scientific replicability. His work combines interdisciplinary methods, often involving twin studies and genome-wide association analyses to explore complex traits.
He actively supervises PhD students, with current advisees including Yue Li, Norman Lin, and Jolene Van Der Mescht. His lab emphasizes collaboration across disciplines, including neuroscience, sociology, and computational modeling.
