Dan Gustavson is an Assistant Research Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, affiliated with the Psychology and Neuroscience Department and the Institute for Behavioral Genetics (IBG). He holds a PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder (2016). His research focuses on the interplay between executive functions, self-regulatory behaviors (e.g., procrastination), and mood variables like trait anxiety, using behavioral genetics and genomic approaches.
Education:
- PhD in Psychology, University of Colorado Boulder, 2016
Research Interests: Behavioral genetics, cognitive aging, psychopathology, executive functions, self-regulation, and the genetic basis of musical engagement. He investigates how genetic and environmental factors influence cognitive abilities, mental health, and substance use across the lifespan.
Grants & Funding:
- NIDA R01 DA059804 (2024–2029): Examines music engagement as a protective factor against adolescent substance use.
- NIA R01 AG089666 (2024–2029): Co-Investigator studying gene-environment interactions in Alzheimer’s disease risk.
- NIDA R01 DA042755 (2024–2029): Co-Investigator analyzing cannabis legalization impacts on twin cohorts.
Labs & Teams: Leads research at the IBG, focusing on genomic and twin studies to understand cognitive and behavioral traits. He collaborates widely on projects involving developmental language disorders, chronic pain genetics, and cognitive reserve.
