Timo Jütten is a Professor at the University of Essex's School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies. He specializes in social and political philosophy, focusing on competition, capitalism, critical theory, and feminism. He holds a DPhil from Sussex University and previously taught at University College Dublin and the University of Groningen.
His research includes:
- Ethics of competition in markets, sports, and education
- Moral status of capitalism using recognition theory
- Frankfurt School critical theory (Habermas, Honneth, Adorno)
- Feminist philosophy and sexual objectification
From 2020-2025, he led the Leverhulme Trust-funded 'Competition and Competitiveness Project'. He also contributed to human rights projects with the Essex Autonomy Project and Human Rights Centre.
