Professor Fabian Freyenhagen is Professor at the University of Essex's School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies. He holds a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Exeter College, Oxford, and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Sheffield.
His research focuses on Frankfurt School critical theory (especially Adorno), ethics, social and political philosophy, and philosophy of psychiatry. Current work examines social pathology's relationship to mental distress, reason/language in early Frankfurt School, ethics after Auschwitz, and action without hope.
Administrative roles include Partnership Lead (2023-present), PGT Director (2023-present), and former Head of School (2014-2017). He teaches for both the Philosophy department and Interdisciplinary Studies Centre.
