Asaf Angermann is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Texas and Director of the Jewish Studies Program. He specializes in critical social philosophy, philosophy of religion, modern Jewish thought, and intersectional studies of race, gender, and sexuality. Born in Israel, he holds a doctorate from Goethe University Frankfurt and has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Toronto and Yale University. His research bridges critical theory, Jewish intellectual history, and contemporary social philosophy.
Dr. Angermann’s academic journey includes studies at Tel Aviv University, Berlin, and London. He is the author of Beschädigte Ironie: Kierkegaard, Adorno und die negative Dialektik (2014) and editor of Theodor W. Adorno and Gershom Scholem: Correspondence 1939–1969 (2015/2021), praised by Jürgen Habermas as a landmark in German-Jewish intellectual history. His work has been featured in journals like Critical Philosophy of Race and Hypatia, and he has contributed to major edited volumes on Adorno.
His current research explores critical theory’s intersections with race, gender, and Black-Jewish relations. He has translated Adorno’s Education to Autonomy and Responsibility into Hebrew and authored commentaries on 20th-century Jewish thought. Despite no explicit mention of awards, his work has received acclaim in venues including the New York Review of Books and The Nation.
Angermann’s academic service includes roles at the University of Louisville and active participation in interdisciplinary dialogues on post-Holocaust philosophy and contemporary social justice issues.
