Timo Hamers

Timo Hamers is an Associate Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Science's Environmental Health & Toxicology department and AIMMS. His research focuses on environmental toxicology, particularly using in vitro bioassays to assess toxicity of pollutants in complex mixtures. He contributes to OECD Test Guidelines for thyroid-related in vitro methods and has led EU-funded studies on endocrine disruptors and neurotoxicants. He teaches environmental toxicology at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels.

Research interests include:

• In vitro bioassay development for environmental pollutant analysis
• Effect-Directed Analysis (EDA) for identifying emerging contaminants
• Thyroid hormone disruption mechanisms and binding proteins
• Risk assessment of persistent pollutants like flame retardants and pesticides

Recent work emphasizes thyroid hormone interactions, endocrine disruption, and environmental pollutants in water and human samples. He has supervised 4 PhD theses and collaborates internationally on projects addressing climate change impacts on water toxicity and urban environmental health.
