Tim Wright is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Humanities at the University of Western Australia and an Emeritus Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Sheffield. He holds a BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on China’s political economy, with a particular emphasis on historical and contemporary economic development. Key areas include the political economy of the coal industry, economic fluctuations in Republican China (1911–1949), and the impact of natural disasters on regional economies.
Wright’s work spans both historical and modern contexts, analyzing topics such as labor dynamics, business-government relations, and regional economic disparities. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Studies module of the Oxford Bibliographies, which includes over 135 articles. His research also explores contemporary issues like economic reforms in China’s coal sector and historical topics such as water control policies during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Publications include The Political Economy of Chinese Coal Industry: Black Gold and Blood Stained Coal (2011) and Coal Mining in China’s Economy and Society, 1895–1937 (1984). His articles often bridge historical analysis with contemporary policy debates, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding China’s economic trajectory.
