Dr. Cao Jin is a Researcher at the Department of Chinese Studies within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Tübingen. She has been working as a Research Project Collaborator since 2018, focusing on the DFG research project 'Translating Western Science, Technology and Medicine to Late Ming China.' Previously, she served as Academic Director at the European Centre for Chinese Studies in Beijing (2014-2017) and as a Visiting Fellow at Peking University's Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (2016).
Dr. Cao holds a PhD in Chinese Studies from the University of Tübingen (2012), an M.A. in Ancient Chinese History from Peking University (2007), and a B.A. in History and Economy from Peking University (2004). Her academic journey reflects a deep commitment to understanding China's economic, scientific, and technological history through rigorous archival research and interdisciplinary approaches.
Her research interests center on the history of economy, science, and technology in China, with particular expertise in historical metrology, monetary systems, mining history, and Sino-Western scientific exchange during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Dr. Cao's work bridges traditional Chinese scholarship with global historical perspectives, examining how local Chinese practices connected with broader Eurasian and global developments. She has made significant contributions to understanding China's monetary systems, particularly the copper-silver bimetallic system, and the translation of Western scientific knowledge into Chinese contexts during the late imperial period.
Analysis of Dr. Cao's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on quantitative approaches to Chinese economic history, with particular attention to silver and copper monetary systems. Her work demonstrates how China's internal economic dynamics were interconnected with global trade networks, especially regarding precious metal flows. She has pioneered research on recently rediscovered manuscripts like the Kunyu gezhi, which provide new insights into cross-cultural scientific exchanges during the Ming-Qing transition period.
- Co-authored German textbook on Qing documentary language based on a criminal case (forthcoming)
- Co-edited volume: Southwest China in Regional and Global Perspectives (c. 1600-1911) (Brill, 2018)
- Contributor to research on historical metrology and Chinese minting technology
Dr. Cao's research is supported by significant collaborations with scholars like Hans Ulrich Vogel and Sabine Kink. Her work on the DFG project examining Western scientific translations in late Ming China demonstrates her ability to lead interdisciplinary research teams. She has established herself as a leading scholar in the field of Chinese economic and scientific history, with particular expertise in monetary systems and Sino-Western knowledge exchange. Her research connects archival discoveries with broader theoretical frameworks in global economic history.
