Lane J. Harris is the Chair and Gordon Poteat Professor of History and Asian Studies at Furman University. His research focuses on Chinese postal history, Republican-era governance, and transnational networks. Harris holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois (2009), an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Washington University, and a B.A. in History from Drake University. He has conducted extensive archival research in China, including work at the Second Historical Archives of Nanjing.
His academic contributions include groundbreaking studies on the Chinese post office’s role in state formation, transnational remittance systems, and Qing and Ming dynasty administrative structures. Harris has translated numerous scholarly works into English, including Huang Xingtao’s *Reshaping China* (2024) and Luo Zhitian’s *Shifts of Power* (2017). His translations emphasize modern China’s intellectual and institutional evolution.
Harris has received prestigious awards such as the SSRC International Dissertation Fellowship (2006–2007) and multiple teaching recognitions at the University of Illinois. His research bridges historical methodologies with contemporary debates on governance, nationalism, and transnationalism.
