Professor Tim Shephard is a musicologist at the University of Sheffield (School of Languages, Arts and Societies) and holds a parallel status-only appointment as Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on Italian Renaissance music (1420-1540), employing interdisciplinary methods that combine musicology with art history, gender studies, and ethnographic reconstruction.
His recent work explores musical knowledge in non-musical sources like printed books and visual art. He has received major funding from the Leverhulme Trust for projects including 'Sounding the Bookshelf 1501: Music in a Year of Italian Printed Books' and 'Music in the Art of Renaissance Italy c.1420-1540'. Current PhD supervision spans topics from Italian court music to contemporary Chinese piano pedagogy.
