Professor Tim McSweeney is the Dawes Chair of Public Protection at Anglia Ruskin University, where he leads the International Policing and Public Protection Research Institute's data-driven research program on public protection issues. With over 20 years of experience, he has conducted research, evaluation, and consultancy examining criminal justice interventions across the UK, Europe, and Australia.
His academic background includes:
- PhD in Public Health and Community Medicine, University of New South Wales, Australia
- BSc (Hons) in Applied Social Science (Social Research), University of North London
Professor McSweeney's research focuses on criminology and public health, particularly examining 'organised' and group-based forms of offending, youth crime and serious violence, and the supervision of those sentenced by courts. His work addresses drug and alcohol misuse within the criminal justice system and explores help-seeking behavior by victims of child sexual abuse. He measures the impact of criminal justice interventions on reoffending and other outcomes, with a special interest in the effectiveness of interventions designed to prevent and deter crime.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on serious and organised crime, analyzing data from England and Wales' criminal justice system. His research employs innovative data linkage methods to examine court outcomes, prison system interactions, and recidivism patterns. He also investigates youth violence prevention programs, fraud offender profiling, and public health threats emerging from dark web markets, particularly related to illicit substances and counterfeit medical products.
Professor McSweeney has secured significant research funding including:
- Dawes Trust funded research on 'Understanding parole success after release from prison in England and Wales' (£100,000, 2023)
- ESRC funded Data First Research Fellowship (£101,230, 2021)
- Home Office funded 'Comparative research on cybercrime, fraud and money laundering offenders' (£91,000, 2020)
- Youth Endowment Fund feasibility and pilot evaluation (£407,000, 2019)
He serves on the International Editorial Board for Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy and has held advisory roles with the Correctional Services Advice and Accreditation Panel, European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, World Health Organisation, and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
As part of the International Policing and Public Protection Research Institute, Professor McSweeney leads a team conducting data-driven research on public protection issues, with a particular focus on evaluating criminal justice interventions and their impact on reducing reoffending and improving public safety.
