Jonathan Gilbert

Dr Jonathan Gilbert is a Lecturer in Law at the Bristol Business and Law School, part of the College of Business and Law at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). He teaches Criminal Law, Financial Crime, and Criminology on the LLB program and supervises LLM students. He also serves as a visiting lecturer in financial crime and criminal justice at Cardiff University and Manchester University.

His educational background includes a PhD from Cardiff University (awarded June 2023) focusing on mortgage fraud and financial services regulation, an MSc in Counter Fraud and Counter Corruption (Distinction), an LLB (Hons), and he is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

Jonathan's research centers on financial crime, including fraud, bribery, corruption, money laundering, and market abuse, with a strong emphasis on criminological theories of white-collar crime, organizational ethics, and regulatory governance. He explores the role of professional enablers and the cultural factors that contribute to ethical slippage within financial institutions.

His work bridges academia and policy, engaging with national and international stakeholders such as the Home Office, Cabinet Office, Serious Fraud Office, Solicitors Regulation Authority, UNODC, and financial institutions. He has presented at numerous academic and professional conferences and contributes to policy development through roles in the APPG on Investment Fraud & Fairer Financial Services, the Wales Fraud Forum, and the Prisoners Education Trust.
