Tim Birks is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials. His research focuses on innovative optical fiber designs, including tapered fibers, photonic lanterns, photonic crystal fibers, and multi-core fibers. He explores how light propagates through these structures using theory, simulations, and experimental fabrication techniques, with applications in telecommunications, medical sensing, and astronomy.
