Professor Tim Allender is an Affiliate Professor in the History Department of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Sydney. He holds a BA (Hons) from Monash University, MA (Hons) from the University of Sydney, and a PhD from the University of Sydney. As a leading scholar in the history of education and imperial studies, his research focuses on Indian education under British colonialism, gender dynamics, and religious institutions in postcolonial contexts. He serves as Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Great Britain and has held visiting professorships at institutions including Heidelberg University and Jawaharlal Nehru University.
His research interests include educational history, sociology of education, colonial and postcolonial studies, and history curriculum development. He has authored over 50 journal articles and books, including Empire Religiosity (2024) and Learning Femininity in Colonial India (2016). His work has been recognized with awards such as the Anne Bloomfield Book Prize and the University of Sydney Supervisor of the Year Award (2021).
Professor Allender has led multiple ARC grants and international collaborative projects, including work on visual literacies in historical education and global histories of teacher education. He currently advises on the Australian Curriculum (History) and serves on editorial boards for journals like Paedagogica Historica and Cogent Education.
Recent research explores transnational educational exchanges, feminist historiography, and the visual representation of colonial education. He has delivered keynote addresses at major international conferences, including the ISCHE World Congress in Istanbul and Berlin.
