Tijo Salverda

Prof. Tijo Salverda is a Guest Professor in the Elite Master Program 'Standards of Decision-Making across Cultures' at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. He holds a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology from VU University Amsterdam and an MA in History from Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research focuses on elites, inequality, corporate actors, and sustainability, with fieldwork in Africa, Europe, and the Global South. He has held academic positions at institutions like the University of Vienna and University of Cologne, and has been a senior researcher at the Global South Studies Center.

Research Interests: His work examines elites' responses to counterpower, financial sector dynamics, and sustainable development. He explores themes like land deals in Zambia, corporate social responsibility, and the intersection of morality and economy. His fieldwork spans Mauritius, South Africa, and Europe, emphasizing ethnographic methods and qualitative analysis.

Awards: Winner of the 2019 essay prize on inequality from the University of Cologne. He also holds certifications in Business Sustainability Management (University of Cambridge) and Sustainable Finance (Frankfurt School).

Teaching and Supervision: Over 20 years of teaching experience in Austria, Germany, South Africa, and the Netherlands. Supervised over 40 BA/MA theses and PhD students. Courses include 'Anthropology of Elites,' 'Economy and Morality,' and 'Qualitative Research Methods.'

Publications: Authored The Franco-Mauritian Elite: Power and Anxiety in the Face of Change (2015), and over 30 refereed articles in journals like Geoforum, African Studies Review, and Journal of Business Anthropology.
