Tiina Abel is a Lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Arts, where she has been working since 2012 in a part-time capacity (0.50 position). Previously, she served as a full-time Lecturer at the same institution from 1995 to 2000. Her academic career spans several decades with significant contributions to art history and museum studies in Estonia.
Abel received her Master's Degree in 2011 from the Institute of Theology of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, though her degree was obtained through final examination without a supervisor. Her foundational education includes studies at Tartu University from 1971 to 1976.
Tiina Abel specializes in 19th century art and art culture, with particular expertise in the classical modernism period. Her research interests encompass the Düsseldorf School of painting, Baltic art history, and the representation of nature in art. She has made significant contributions to understanding the connections between Estonian art and broader European art movements, particularly focusing on how Estonian artists engaged with and adapted international styles. Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent focus on 19th and early 20th century Estonian art, with particular attention to the Düsseldorf School's influence, Baltic German artists, and the development of Estonian modernism.

Panoramas and Close-ups" conference in 2010, and has been a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) since 2004. Her administrative work extends to serving on the Council of the Tartu Art Museum (2014-2016) and the Estonian Academy of Arts KTI Master's Council (2011-2013).
Abel is an accomplished curator who has organized numerous significant exhibitions at major Estonian museums, particularly focusing on 19th century art, the Düsseldorf School, and Estonian modernism. Her curatorial work has been instrumental in shaping the understanding of Estonian art history and its connections to broader European artistic movements. She is currently involved in the research project "Emergence of a Civilised Nation: Decadence and Transitionality in 1905-1940" (2022-2026), funded by the Estonian Research Council with 760,450 EUR.
