معرفی
Dr. Tihomir Balog serves as Head of the Laboratory for Metabolism and Aging within the Division of Molecular Medicine at the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, Croatia. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying aging processes, with particular emphasis on oxidative stress, antioxidant defense systems, and metabolic regulation. With over two decades of research experience, he has established himself as a leading expert in studying sex-specific differences in stress response and mitochondrial function.
Dr. Balog's primary research interests center around oxidative stress mechanisms and their relationship to aging processes. His laboratory investigates how sirtuins, particularly SIRT3, regulate redox homeostasis and metabolic pathways in a sex-dependent manner. His work has demonstrated significant gender differences in antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation during aging. Current research focuses on how SIRT3 modulates mitochondrial function in response to hyperoxia and high-fat diets, with implications for understanding age-related diseases and developing targeted interventions.
Analysis of Dr. Balog's recent publications reveals a strong focus on sex-specific differences in SIRT3-mediated regulation of redox and metabolic signaling. His work consistently demonstrates how males and females respond differently to oxidative stress, hyperoxia, and metabolic challenges at the molecular level. This research has important implications for personalized medicine approaches to age-related diseases, as it highlights the need to consider gender as a biological variable in therapeutic development.
Dr. Balog has supervised numerous graduate students, including Predović Jurica (PhD), Šarić Ana (Master's thesis), and Nikolac Matea (Diploma thesis). His laboratory maintains extensive collaborations both within the Ruđer Bošković Institute and internationally, particularly on projects involving oxidative stress biomarkers, mitochondrial function, and gender-specific responses to environmental stressors.
The Laboratory for Metabolism and Aging, under Dr. Balog's leadership, maintains state-of-the-art facilities for studying oxidative stress markers, mitochondrial function, and metabolic pathways. The team employs advanced techniques including molecular biology, biochemistry, and animal models to investigate the complex interplay between metabolism, aging, and stress response. Current projects focus on understanding how SIRT3 mediates sex-specific responses to metabolic challenges and oxidative stress, with potential applications in age-related disease prevention and treatment.
