Dr. Tiancong Zhu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Purdue University's College of Science. He specializes in designing and investigating 2D quantum materials and heterostructures to explore atomic-scale physics and quantum phenomena such as magnetism, topological properties, and superconductivity.
- Establishing labs at Birck Nanotechnology Center (with scanning tunneling microscope and molecular beam epitaxy) and Physics Building (van der Waals material assembly)
- Plans to develop courses on scanning probe microscopy and thin film deposition
- Collaborative focus on quantum technology applications
Education:
- B.S. in Physics, Peking University
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics, Ohio State University
- Postdoctoral work at UC Berkeley (2019-2023)
Research Emphasis: Combines atomic-precision material synthesis (molecular beam epitaxy, van der Waals stacking) with advanced characterization techniques to bridge microscopic mechanisms and macroscopic quantum behavior.
Collaborations: Engages with Prof. Roland Kawakami (Ohio State) and Prof. Michael Crommie (UC Berkeley) during training phases, now joining Purdue's quantum research ecosystem.
Personal: An outdoor enthusiast and avid cyclist who organized cycling trips during his postdoc at Berkeley.
