Dr. Tianchan Jiang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry within St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at St. John’s University. She combines advanced expertise in electrochemical energy storage with a passion for science education, particularly for language-minority students.
Her educational path includes a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the State University of New York at Binghamton and an Ed.M. in Science Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Dr. Jiang’s research program straddles two complementary domains. On the materials side, she focuses on synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical evaluation of advanced electrode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, including silicon, carbon, and iron-based nanomaterials. On the education side, she investigates pedagogical strategies that support language learners in undergraduate science classrooms, leveraging her industrial experience in battery R&D to create authentic, context-rich learning environments.
Across her six peer-reviewed publications (2009–2017), a clear trajectory emerges: early work on porous inorganic–organic hybrid frameworks evolved into highly cited studies on nanostructured battery anodes, all emphasizing structure–property relationships and scalable synthetic routes.
Teaching responsibilities include both introductory and advanced chemistry courses such as College Chemistry, General Chemistry I & II, Advanced General Chemistry II, and Special Topics in Analytical Chemistry.
Dr. Jiang previously served as a research scientist in the industrial sector, developing high-performance batteries for military applications under Nobel laureate Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham; this background informs ongoing grant proposals and future research directions at St. John’s.
