Professor Thushan de Silva is a Clinician Scientist at the University of Sheffield's School of Medicine and Population Health, with dual appointments as an Honorary Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases in Sheffield and a Principal Investigator at the MRC Unit The Gambia (LSHTM). He co-directs the Florey Institute of Infection and leads the host-pathogen interactions theme.
His research integrates human immunology, epidemiology, molecular diagnostics, and genomics to study respiratory viruses (influenza, SARS-CoV-2) and Streptococcus pyogenes, focusing on infection dynamics, vaccine responses, and immunocompromised populations. A major contributor to COG-UK consortium and PITCH study during the pandemic, he was awarded an MBE (2021) for his work.
Key publications analyze vaccine efficacy in hematopoietic transplant recipients, Streptococcus transmission in Africa, and hybrid immunity mechanisms. He has led trials on live attenuated influenza vaccine effects in Gambian children and SARS-CoV-2 immune responses in healthcare workers.
