معرفی
Wendy Barclay is the Regius Professor of Infectious Disease and Head of the Department of Infectious Disease at Imperial College London, part of the Faculty of Medicine. She leads the Barclay Lab, focusing on respiratory viruses, particularly influenza and SARS-CoV-2. Her research spans viral pathogenesis, host adaptation, and vaccine development, with translational work on antivirals and vaccine substrates. She has held roles at Imperial since 2007, previously at the University of Reading. Notable achievements include contributions to pandemic influenza vaccine strategies and studies on SARS-CoV-2 variants.
Education: BSc in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University; PhD in virology at the Common Cold Unit, Salisbury, under Drs. David Tyrrell and Fred Brown. Postdoctoral training included work with Prof. Jeff Almond at Reading and Dr. Peter Palese at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York.
- Affiliations: Barclay Laboratory, Immuno-Pathology Network, NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Respiratory Infections, Vaccine Research Network.
- Research Interests: Molecular mechanisms of viral transmission, host range restrictions, and immune responses. Current projects include SARS-CoV-2 variant tracking (G2P2 consortium), influenza host adaptation, and ANP32 protein roles in viral replication.
Publications span SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics, antiviral resistance, and influenza pathogenesis. Awards include the Microbiology Society Prize Medal, Barcroft Medal, and CBE. She has advised on pandemic responses, including REACT-2 seroprevalence studies.
- Grants: Funded by MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, and commercial partnerships.
- Lab Members: Includes PhD students Jack Hassard, Amalie Rasmussen, Dorothee Reuss, and researchers like Jonathan Brown and Jie Zhou.
Recent activities include chairing the 2025 NSV conference, leading the G2P2 consortium, and receiving the Regius Professorship in 2025. Media engagements include BBC Horizon and World Economic Forum talks.
