Thorbjørn Knudsen

Torbjørn Knudsen is a Professor in Strategic Organization Design at the Department of Marketing and Management, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU). He is also the Chair of Social Sciences at the Danish Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS), SDU, and leads the Strategic Organization Design (SOD) research unit. He holds a PhD in Business Economics from SDU and has been a central figure in building SOD into a leading international research environment with scholars from institutions like Stanford, LBS, and Cambridge.

His research centers on how organizational structures—such as incentive systems and coordination mechanisms—influence the aggregation of individual actions into organizational performance. He investigates strategic organization design, decision-making, economic evolution, and organizational adaptation, often using mathematical and evolutionary models. His work bridges management, economics, and complexity science.

The most recent articles highlight a consistent focus on organizational learning, decision-making under complexity, evolutionary dynamics, and the structural design of organizations. They appear in top-tier journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, and Administrative Science Quarterly, indicating strong empirical and theoretical contributions to strategic management and organization theory.

Knudsen has supervised over 50 master’s theses and 10 PhD theses. He has led major research projects totaling approximately 3.75 million Euros, including the Sapere Aude Advanced Grant and the Strategic Organization Design project. He is actively involved in academic service, serving as Senior Editor of Organization Science, editorial board member of Strategic Management Journal, and co-founder of the TOM Society. His international collaborations span institutions such as Stanford, Wharton, INSEAD, and LBS, and he has held visiting professorships at Santa Fe Institute and Pompeu Fabra.

He leads the SOD research unit, a dynamic team of 14 researchers including six international PhDs, and co-founded the Theoretical Organization Models (TOM) society and the Organizational Design Community (ODC), both hosting annual workshops for leading scholars. He also plays a leadership role in DIAS and contributes to policy and knowledge dissemination through media and public engagement.
