Thomas White is a Lecturer in China and Sustainable Development at the Lau China Institute, King's College London. He holds a PhD and MPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge, a BA from the University of Oxford, and a Diploma in Mandarin from SOAS. He is an Affiliate of the Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit at Cambridge. Previously, he worked at the University of Cambridge and the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. His research focuses on China's borderlands, political ecology, pastoralism, infrastructure, and Sino-Mongolian relations, with a particular emphasis on transnational economic interactions and ecological governance.

Research Interests: Thomas examines social, economic, and ecological transformations in China's border regions, including the Belt and Road Initiative's impact, Sino-Mongolian relations, and the role of peripheral regions in nation-building. His current work explores meat and livestock exports across the Sino-Mongolian border and their ecological and geopolitical implications. He leads the UKRI-funded project 'Trading Mongolia's Sovereign Meat.'
Publications: His research trends focus on China's marginal regions, transnational environmental politics, and the intersection of infrastructure, animals, and state power. Key works include China's Camel Country (2024) and articles on dust storms, pastoralism, and road ecology.
Grants & Collaborations: Co-Investigator on the UKRI-funded 'Trading Mongolia's Sovereign Meat' project. Active in the Religious and Ethnic Diversity in China and Asia Research Unit (REDCARU).
