Thomas Weber is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Rochester. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research focuses on the ocean’s biological carbon pump and its role in global climate, combining numerical modeling with observational data to study nutrient cycles, microbial respiration, and trace metal dynamics. He collaborates closely with observational oceanographers to interpret large datasets from initiatives like GEOTRACES.
His education includes a PhD in Oceanography from UCLA. His courses include Seminar in Ocean Biogeochemistry and Marine Ecosystem and Carbon Cycle Modeling.
Research interests span ocean biogeochemical cycles, trace metal cycling (Fe, Zn, Cd), and the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. Recent work explores sinking particle dynamics using Underwater Visual Profilers and the interplay between nitrogen-fixing and denitrifying organisms.
His publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to understanding ocean nutrient dynamics and carbon sequestration mechanisms. While no formal awards are listed, his work has appeared in high-impact journals like Science and Nature.
He advises no listed students but collaborates extensively with observational teams. His lab focuses on integrating models with field data to predict climate-driven changes in marine systems.
