Thomas Tobin is a Professor of Veterinary Science at the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center and Professor in the Graduate Center for Toxicology/Department of Toxicology and Cancer Biology at the University of Kentucky. With a career spanning over 50 years since joining UK in 1975, he has established himself as a leading authority in equine pharmacology, therapeutics, and toxicology. His work has significantly shaped equine medication regulation worldwide.
Dr. Tobin's research interests focus on equine pharmacology, therapeutic medication regulation, and toxicology, particularly in the areas of drug testing methodology, regulatory threshold development, and the pharmacological basis for equine medication rules. His pioneering work introduced ELISA testing to horse racing, leading to the creation of the first University of Kentucky spin-off company, which was later sold to Neogen Corporation. He developed patented treatments for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) and conducted groundbreaking research on Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome (MRLS), proposing its unique biological mechanism.
His research program has generated approximately $16 million in research support through 2017 and produced about 500 publications, including three awarded patents and numerous licensed technologies. His work has directly influenced international racing regulations, culminating in the publication of 'World Rules for Equine Drug Testing and Therapeutic Medication Regulation' in 2012.
Dr. Tobin has advised 27 graduate students and mentored numerous postdoctoral fellows. His laboratory has developed certified reference standards and stable isotope internal standards for over 20 therapeutic medications used in racehorses, addressing the challenge of trace-level detection in modern testing.
Among his numerous awards are being named HBPA Man of the Year (twice), receiving the Dubai Millennium Medal, and the National HBPA Industrial Service Award. The Toxicology program he directed was rated the only 'extremely effective' graduate program in Kentucky by the National Research Council in 1992-93.
