Thomas Steitz is the Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and Professor of Chemistry at Yale University, holding this position since 1970. He is also an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1986. His research focuses on ribosome structure, antibiotic development, and enzyme chemistry. Steitz earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1966 and has held visiting roles at institutions like the University of Colorado and Caltech. His groundbreaking work earned him the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Key achievements include pioneering studies on ribosome function, elucidating mechanisms of antibiotic action, and structural biology advancements. Over 50 students have been mentored in his lab, many contributing to structural biology and pharmaceutical research. His lab is part of the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale’s Bass Center.
