Joan Steitz is the Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale School of Medicine, where she has been a pioneering figure in RNA biology for decades. She leads the Steitz Lab, which is affiliated with multiple interdisciplinary programs including the Yale Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS), the Yale Cancer Center, the Center for RNA Science and Medicine, and the Yale Stem Cell Center. Her work has fundamentally advanced understanding of RNA-protein complexes and their roles in gene expression.

Dr. Steitz's research focuses on noncoding RNAs and their interactions with proteins. Her landmark discovery—alongside student Michael Lerner—of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) revolutionized the understanding of pre-mRNA splicing. Her lab continues to investigate the mechanisms of RNA processing, including the exon junction complex, microRNA biogenesis, stress-induced readthrough transcripts, and viral noncoding RNAs from pathogens like Epstein-Barr virus and Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. Her work combines molecular biology, biochemistry, and structural approaches to dissect how RNA molecules regulate gene expression at multiple levels.
