Thomas Schumacher

Thomas Schumacher serves as Professor and Associate Chair of Graduate Programs in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Portland State University's Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. A registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Delaware, he chairs ACI Committee 444 on Structural Health Monitoring and Instrumentation.

Dr. Schumacher's research centers on non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of civil infrastructure, specializing in stress wave techniques like acoustic emission and ultrasonic monitoring for concrete structures. His work integrates vibration-based impulse response testing, video-based motion analysis, and novel carbon nanotube (CNT) sensor development through collaboration with the University of Delaware. Additional expertise spans bridge engineering under wave forces, data fusion methodologies, and infrastructure asset management systems.

He teaches core structural engineering courses including Indeterminate Structures, Vibration Analysis, Prestressed Concrete Design, and graduate-level Sensing and Monitoring of Structures.
