Thomas Renström is an Associate Professor in Economics at Durham University Business School, where he serves as Director of MSc Finance Programmes and previously held positions as Deputy Head of Department. He holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford under Nobel Laureate Sir James Mirrlees. Renström teaches Advanced Macro, Public Choice, and Public Economics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
His research spans energy economics, optimal taxation, environmental policy, and population economics. Key areas include green finance, dynamic taxation models, electricity market reforms in developing economies, and welfare-theoretic approaches to population growth. Renström maintains active research collaborations across Europe and Asia.
Renström has received numerous awards including the Northern Bridge Consortium Studentship and Dean's Teaching Award. He has delivered plenary addresses at international conferences including the Bangladesh Energy Summit and Sustainable Development Goals Workshop. His extensive publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to public and environmental economics over two decades.
PhD Supervision and Grants:
- Supervised 15 PhD students to completion on topics ranging from energy economics to macroprudential policy
- Received €100,000 EU grant for international conferences on Dynamic Aspects of Taxation
- Developed new MSc programmes in Economics with four specialist routes
