Thomas Pfau is the Alice Mary Baldwin Distinguished Professor of English at Duke University, holding a secondary appointment in the Divinity School. He is affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and has been recognized as a Bass Fellow. Pfau earned his Ph.D. from SUNY Buffalo (1989) and an M.A. from UC Irvine (1985).
His research spans literary, philosophical, and theological subjects from the 18th to early 20th centuries, with a focus on Romanticism, aesthetics, and German literature. He has authored four monographs, edited seven essay collections, and published over fifty essays. Notable works include analyses of Beethoven’s music, Rilke’s poetry, and Kantian aesthetics.
Pfau’s recent articles address AI’s impact on human flourishing, theological dialogues, and the interplay between form and content in art. His grants include funding for Romanticism studies, and his awards include a National Humanities Center Fellowship (2010) and ACLS Fellowship (2010).
He teaches interdisciplinary courses such as 'Modernism and the Arts' and 'Poetry and/as Theology,' reflecting his commitment to bridging literary studies with philosophy and religion. His service includes roles on the ACLS Graduate Fellows Committee and the Philosophy, Art, Literature (PAL) Steering Committee.
