Thomas O’Halloran is the MSU Foundation Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics and Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University. His research focuses on metallomics, cancer biology, and bioinorganic chemistry. He holds a Ph.D. in Bioinorganic Chemistry from Columbia University, an M.A. in Chemistry from the University of Missouri, and completed postdoctoral work at MIT.
Research Interests: Dr. O’Halloran’s interdisciplinary work explores metal ion-regulated cellular pathways, metalloregulatory proteins, and metallochaperones. His lab investigates how cells manage iron, copper, and zinc in cancer contexts, leading to discoveries of anticancer agents targeting metal-regulated pathways in blood, breast, and brain cancers.
Professional Background: Previously served on the faculty at Northwestern University before joining MSU. His contributions include defining metal receptor protein families and pioneering studies on inorganic phenotypes in metastatic breast cancer.
