Thomas O’Halloran is the MSU Foundation Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics and Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University. His research focuses on metalloregulatory proteins, metallochaperones, and the inorganic phenotypes of cancer cells, particularly metastatic breast cancer. He develops novel inorganic compounds targeting cancer pathways and anticancer agents like platinum-based drugs.
Dr. O’Halloran earned his Ph.D. in Bioinorganic Chemistry from Columbia University (after a M.A. in Chemistry from the University of Missouri) and completed postdoctoral training at MIT. Prior to joining MSU, he was faculty at Northwestern University. His interdisciplinary work spans biochemistry, protein structures, and cellular physiology, with a focus on metal ion regulation in health and disease.
His lab investigates how metal ions like iron, copper, and zinc are differentially managed in normal vs. cancerous cells, uncovering therapeutic targets for blood, breast, and brain cancers.
