Thomas McNeil is a Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Community Ecology, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Halle, Germany. His research focuses on microbial ecology, forest ecology, and biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships. He holds a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Victoria (Canada) and an MSc in Environmental Pollution from the University of Reading (UK). His work explores plant-microbe interactions and soil nutrient dynamics, particularly in temperate woodland ecosystems.
Recent contributions include a 2025 publication in Nature examining tree species growth patterns, reflecting his expertise in ecological dynamics. Collaborations with Prof. Ingolf Kühn and Dr. Sonja Knapp highlight his integration within interdisciplinary teams. Current research emphasizes environmental drivers of soil microbial communities and their implications for ecosystem resilience.
- Education: BSc Microbiology (2018), University of Victoria
- MSc Environmental Pollution (2023), University of Reading
He previously served as a Research Assistant at Forest Research (UK) within the Land Use and Ecosystem Services Group. His lab affiliations include the Molecular Ecology Group at UFZ, contributing to projects on plant-soil feedback mechanisms.
