Thomas McGovern is a Professor of Anthropology at the City University of New York (CUNY), Hunter College, directing the CUNY Human Ecodynamics Research Center (HERC) and co-directing the Hunter College Zooarchaeology Laboratory. A founder of the North Atlantic Biocultural Organization (NABO) and co-director of the Global Human Ecodynamics Alliance (GHEA), his work bridges archaeology with global change research through initiatives like IHOPE and UNESCO BRIDGES.
Education:
- PhD, Columbia University, 1979
Research Focus: McGovern's work integrates environmental archaeology, zooarchaeology, and island archaeology to explore long-term human ecodynamics in the North Atlantic and Circumpolar regions. His research examines climate change impacts over millennial timescales, emphasizing resilience frameworks and the application of archaeological data to modern sustainability challenges. Key themes include Norse settlement adaptations, resource management in fragile ecosystems, and community responses to environmental threats.
Publication Trends: Recent articles (2015-2020) reveal a shift toward interdisciplinary data integration, combining zooarchaeology with climate science and digital humanities. His work increasingly addresses Anthropocene dynamics, focusing on community-led conservation, walrus ivory trade networks, and soil erosion impacts on Icelandic settlements. GHEA and NABO frameworks enable cross-regional analysis of societal resilience.
Scientific Recognition:
- 2019 Society for American Archaeology Presidential Recognition award
- 2019 St Andrews Article Prize in European Environmental History
- 2010 Gordon R. Willey journal prize
Mentorship and Funding: McGovern advises doctoral students including Cameron Turley (NSF-funded PhD on Moravian missions in Greenland) and Francis Feeley, alongside MA student Aka Bendtsen. His $3M+ grant portfolio includes NSF projects like RESPONSE Greenland ($850k) and Comparative Island Ecodynamics ($1.28M), focusing on climate-threatened archaeology and community capacity building. Recent grants emphasize collaborative fieldwork in Greenland and Orkney.
Research Infrastructure: He co-directs the Hunter College Zooarchaeology Lab (a regional center of excellence) and coordinates NABO's international network. His leadership extends to GHEA's global data integration, IHOPE's Climate Threats working group, and UNESCO BRIDGES initiatives in Greenland and Orkney, fostering interdisciplinary teams across 12 institutions.
