Dr. Julie Bond is an Associate Professor at the University of Bradford, affiliated with the School of Archaeological and Forensic Sciences under the Faculty of Life Sciences. Her research focuses on climate and environmental impacts on agrarian strategies in marginal environments, particularly in the North Atlantic region. She co-directs excavations at Swandro (Orkney) and has led major projects such as the Viking Unst Project and Old Scatness excavations. She is an Adjunct Research Professor at CUNY (since 2010) and a member of international organizations like NABO and GHEA.
Her work integrates field archaeology with zooarchaeological analysis, examining topics like Viking settlement patterns, ritual use of animals in funerary practices, and subsistence economies. Notable projects include the Heart of the Atlantic Project in the Faroe Islands and collaborative efforts with institutions like Historic Environment Scotland. She has received grants from NSF, Heritage Lottery Fund, and others.
Bond’s teaching excellence was recognized through the 2015 Vice Chancellor’s Award. She supervises research students exploring agricultural intensification, Viking Landnám, and cremation practices. She also leads community outreach initiatives, such as the Swandro-Orkney Coastal Archaeology Trust.
