Thomas Lowman is an Assistant Professor in World History at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of History. His research focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly the history of state-society relations and coercive institutions from pre-colonial to modern eras. He holds a PhD from Durham University (2019) and taught at SOAS University of London and the University of Warwick before joining Cambridge in 2022.
Research interests include political violence in Idi Amin's Uganda, human rights organizations in 20th-century Africa, colonialism's legacy, and East African comparative history. He is preparing a regional project on East Africa post-monograph and teaches modules on evidence-based argumentation and colonialism.
Teaching responsibilities include Papers 21, 23, 29, and Outlook 10. He is designing a new Research Project on colonialism for 2023-24.
