Nicholas Bernards is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies (Taught) in the Department of Global Sustainable Development at the University of Warwick. He specializes in political economy, focusing on intersections of labor, finance, and global governance with an emphasis on colonial legacies and sustainable development. Prior to joining Warwick in 2017, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at Queen’s University, Canada, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
His research critically examines financialization, development policies, and colonial histories, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. He teaches modules on debt, global labor, and sustainable development governance. Notable publications include *Fictions of Financialization* (2024) and *A Critical History of Poverty Finance* (2022), which explore financial systems and their historical roots in colonialism. His work integrates Marxist perspectives to analyze exploitation, state roles, and global inequalities.
Bernards supervises PhD students in areas such as critical political ecology, global labor issues, and technological change in sustainable development. His teaching qualifications include Fellow status with the Higher Education Academy. His research outputs span books, journal articles, and policy-oriented blogs addressing climate finance, fintech, and development challenges.
