Thomas Lesaffre is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Ecology and Evolution within the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Since 2021, he has been working in the research groups of Prof. Charles Mullon and Prof. John Pannell, focusing on theoretical models of plant evolution.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor in Population and Organismal Biology, University of Lille, France (2012-2015)
- Master of Science in Evolutionary Ecology, University of Lille, France (2015-2017)
- PhD in the Evo-Eco-Paleo (EEP) Lab, University of Lille/CNRS, France (2017-2021)
Dr. Lesaffre is a theoretical evolutionary biologist with a focus on plant evolution. His research employs mathematical and computational models to investigate the interplay between life-history traits, mating systems, and genetic factors such as mutation load. He is particularly interested in the evolution of plant sexual systems, including the transition from hermaphroditism to dioecy and the emergence of sex determination mechanisms and sexual dimorphism.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend in modeling the evolution of separate sexes in plants, with emphasis on the genetic and ecological factors driving the transition to dioecy and the associated evolution of sexual dimorphism. His work often integrates life-history evolution and mutation processes, providing theoretical insights into long-standing questions in plant evolutionary biology.
Dr. Lesaffre is actively involved in collaborative research within the Pannell and Mullon groups, contributing to projects on plant evolutionary genetics. His office is located in room 4323 at the University of Lausanne.
