John Pannell is a Professor in Plant Evolution at the University of Lausanne, affiliated with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine and the Department of Ecology and Evolution. His research focuses on the evolutionary biology of plants, particularly transitions between sexual systems, sex chromosome evolution, polyploidy, and local adaptation. He has held academic positions at the University of Oxford (1999-2011) and the University of Lausanne (since 2011), with postdoctoral experience at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Toronto.

Former members include Dr. Gill Campbell, Dr. Guillaume Cossard, and Dr. Santiago Gonzalez-Martinez.
Lab Projects: Current work examines transitions between sexual systems in Mercurialis annua, sex allocation in Anemone alpina, and the genomic consequences of range expansions. The lab employs theoretical models, bioinformatics, fieldwork, and experimental populations to study these questions.
Collaborations and Funding: The Pannell Group collaborates with researchers across Europe and has secured funding through competitive grants, including support from the European Research Council (ERC) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
