Charles Mullon is a Professor of Evolutionary Ecology in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Lausanne's Faculty of Biology and Medicine. He leads the Theoretical Evolutionary Ecology Lab, which focuses on understanding the genetic and ecological bases of variation in complex traits through mathematical modeling and theoretical approaches.
His academic background includes a B.Sci. in Mathematics from Imperial College London (2003-2006), followed by an M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics (2007), M.Res. in Biological Complexity (2008), and Ph.D. in Mathematical Biology (2008-2012), all from University College London. After completing a postdoctoral position at the University of Lausanne (2013-2019) and a brief period as a Lecturer Fellow at The Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Japan (2019), he returned to Lausanne in January 2020 as an Eccellenza Group Leader before becoming a professor in 2024.
Mullon's research spans evolutionary theory, adaptive polymorphism, social and ecological interactions, population structure, and extra-genetic inheritance. His lab develops mathematical models to understand how ecological conditions favor phenotypic differences between individuals and the genetic mechanisms underlying such variation. Key research themes include adaptation to heterogeneous resources, evolution of sexual systems, sexual selection and conflict, traits with lasting ecological effects, and population genetics of structured populations.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on theoretical evolutionary biology with recent work appearing in high-impact journals including PNAS, Evolution, Genetics, and The American Naturalist. His research often examines how population structure, dispersal patterns, and ecological inheritance shape evolutionary dynamics and genetic variation.

Mullon mentors several PhD students including Iris Prigent, Vitor Sudbrack, Ritam Das, and Julie Roux, who work on diverse projects related to evolutionary dynamics, sexual systems, and ecological inheritance. He leads the Theoretical Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Topic Group that meets biweekly at UNIL, fostering theoretical discussions among researchers. His lab collaborates extensively within the Department of Ecology and Evolution, working with researchers like Laurent Lehmann, John Pannell, and Thomas Lesaffre on fundamental questions in evolutionary biology.
