Prof. Thomas Karl is a University Professor and Head of the Institute for Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences (ACINN) at the University of Innsbruck, leading the Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry (APC) group. His research focuses on atmospheric chemistry, air quality, and biosphere-atmosphere interactions, with emphasis on trace gas fluxes, urban pollution dynamics, and climate feedbacks. He leads major projects like KARLOS (urban AQ monitoring) and Alp-Air, and collaborates internationally on environmental meteorology and mountain climate studies. His work integrates advanced observational techniques like proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and eddy covariance measurements to quantify emissions and atmospheric processes.
Research interests include micrometeorology, biogeochemical cycles, and chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS). Recent studies address methane fluxes in urban areas, drought impacts on vegetation emissions, and ozone chemistry in high-NOx environments. He teaches courses such as Introduction to Atmospheric Science and supervises doctoral programs in mountain climate and environmental sciences. His APC group operates the Innsbruck Atmospheric Observatory (IAO), conducting field campaigns and developing innovative measurement tools for urban and alpine settings.
Key contributions include resolving urban emission sources (e.g., natural gas leaks in Beijing), improving air quality models via flux data, and linking vegetation stress to atmospheric chemistry. He actively engages in interdisciplinary initiatives like the Innsbruck Doctoral College for Alpine Biology and Climate Research, fostering collaborative projects across geochemistry, ecology, and atmospheric physics.
