Thomas K. Park is a Professor of Anthropology and Research Anthropologist at the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology, as well as a Professor in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona. His primary affiliations include the School of Anthropology. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology and History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1983), alongside multiple advanced degrees in Anthropology, Agricultural Economics, and Philosophy. His research focuses on North Africa, the Sahel, environmental and urban issues, political ecology, and economic development.
Dr. Park has conducted extensive fieldwork in Mauritania, Senegal, Morocco, and other African nations. He has led major NSF-funded projects, including a $400,000 study on human-environment relationships in Mauritania/Senegal (2007–2014) and a $500,000 initiative to analyze urbanization impacts via GIS technology across six African cities (1999–2003). He has authored/co-authored seminal works like Historical Dictionary of Morocco (3rd ed., 2016) and Risk and Tenure in Arid Lands (1993).
His research interests span urbanization, economic theory, flood recession agriculture, Saharan studies, and the history of credit systems. He has collaborated with international researchers and institutions, contributing to interdisciplinary frameworks that bridge anthropology, geography, and history.
Dr. Park speaks Arabic, English, French, and Norwegian, with proficiency in several other languages. He is married to Claire Campbell Park, a noted author and scholar in Middle Eastern studies.
