Christopher Wise is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Western Washington University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He has been affiliated with the university since 1996 and holds a PhD in his field. A distinguished scholar with a four-time Fulbright Scholar designation, Wise has taught and conducted research globally, including at the University of Jordan (2001–2003) and the University of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (1996–1997). His work emphasizes African, Middle Eastern, and Francophone literatures, with a focus on the Sahel region and postcolonial studies.
Wise’s research interests span African Sahel societies, particularly Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Senegal, as well as the Maghreb and Middle East. His work integrates critical theory, philosophy, and translation studies, with a particular emphasis on Islamic studies, Sufi traditions, and the intersection of literature with political and religious identity. He has translated and edited numerous works by African authors, including the Tuareg poet Hawad and Norbert Zongo, contributing significantly to the global recognition of Sahel and Francophone African literature.

In addition to his scholarly contributions, Wise leads Western Washington University’s annual faculty-led Global Learning Program to Senegal, engaging 15 students annually in immersive cultural and academic experiences. His teaching focuses on world literatures, American Studies, and Islamic Studies, reflecting his commitment to cross-cultural education and global outreach.
Wise is actively involved in academic leadership within the English Department, contributing to curriculum development and international partnerships. His work bridges literary analysis with socio-political critique, emphasizing decolonial perspectives and the preservation of marginalized voices in literature and history.
