Thomas Hoppe

Thomas Hoppe is a Full Professor in the Department of Governance and Technology for Sustainability. His research focuses on sustainable development, energy policy, and environmental governance, with an emphasis on community-driven initiatives and urban sustainability. He has contributed to projects like the WaterWarmth pilots and Smart City Amsterdam frameworks, analyzing governance structures and inclusion in energy transitions.

His work addresses barriers/opportunities in alternative energy systems, local ownership of wind projects, and energy autarky. He has presented at international conferences on topics including energy democracy and climate policy accountability. In 2011, he received the G.A. van Poelje Jaarprijs for contributions to public administration research.

He has engaged in over 5 supervised research projects and actively participates in city branding analyses, climate governance studies, and interdisciplinary sustainability collaborations. His recent work highlights intersections between energy justice, regional policy coherence, and socio-technical transitions.
