Thomas J. Hope is a Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology (Feinberg School of Medicine) and Biomedical Engineering (McCormick School of Engineering) at Northwestern University. His research focuses on HIV cellular virology, mucosal immunology, and prevention science, using advanced imaging techniques to study viral entry, assembly, and transmission dynamics. He leads the Hope Lab, which pioneers microscopic imaging of HIV interactions with cells and tissues to inform HIV prevention strategies like vaccines and microbicides. His work integrates molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics to address early HIV transmission steps and develops tools for in vivo tracking of viral particles.
Education: PhD in Immunology from UC Berkeley (1988), postdoctoral fellowship at UCSF (1992). His lab’s recent work includes SARS-CoV-2 studies, exploring mucociliary clearance effects on viral spread and PET/CT imaging of HIV distribution. Collaborations span HIV cure research, including TGF-β blockade to reactivate latent reservoirs, and global PrEP strategy evaluations.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches, with a focus on viral dynamics, antibody distribution, and innovative imaging. The lab’s translational efforts aim to reduce HIV transmission through better understanding of mucosal barriers and immune responses.
