Prof. Dr. Thomas Hoeren is a full Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Münster and Director of the Institute for Information, Telecommunications and Media Law (ITM) since 1998. He serves as Co-editor of journals like Multimedia und Recht, Zeitschrift für Rechtstheorie, and International Journal of Law and Information Technology. Active in interdisciplinary research, he combines law with theology, informatics, and art trade law.
- Education: Studied Catholic theology (licentiate thesis on 'Churches and data protection') and law at Münster, Tübingen, and London; first state examination (1987), second state exam (1991), doctorate (1989, 'Software transfer as a purchase in kind'), habilitation (1994, 'Self-regulation in banking and insurance law')
- Research Focus: Specializes in media law, copyright law, competition law, and legal informatics with emphasis on digital economy, intellectual property, and IT regulation
Scientific awards include the ALCATEL-SEL Research Award, German-Dutch cooperation prize, and Daidalos silver coin. He has held visiting professorships at Stanford University, Harvard Law School, Kyushu University, and the University of Amsterdam, and maintains editorial roles in leading law journals.
