Thomas Grewal is an Associate Professor in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Sydney's School of Pharmacy. He holds affiliations with The Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation and The University of Sydney Nano Institute. His research focuses on membrane transport, cell signaling, and cholesterol metabolism, with applications in cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic disorders.
He completed a Diplom (Honours) and PhD in Germany, followed by postdoctoral training in Canada and Germany. His career includes leadership roles at the University Hospital Eppendorf (Hamburg) and the Centre for Immunology (Sydney). He has published 95 manuscripts, including works in Cell Reports, Oncogene, and Journal of Cell Science, and has secured funding from NHMRC, National Heart Foundation, and Cure Cancer Australia.
Research interests include Annexin A6 function, LDL-cholesterol regulation in cancer progression, membrane contact sites, and obesity-drug interactions. He collaborates with leading scientists globally, including teams in Barcelona, Hamburg, and Helsinki.
Teaching involves coordinating fourth-year pharmacy courses and mentoring 17 MD, 12 Honours, and 4 PhD students. Awards include the 2003 Habilitation in Biochemistry and the 2008 Elizabeth Wunsch Scholarship.
Current projects address anti-cancer drug efficacy in obesity, mTOR signaling in prostate cancer, and membrane contact sites in metastatic prostate cancer treatment.
