Thomas F. Turner is a Professor at the University of New Mexico’s Department of Biology and Curator of the Division of Fishes at the Museum of Southwestern Biology. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Florida International University (1996). His research focuses on the evolution and ecology of aquatic systems in dryland regions, using methods like stable isotope analysis, molecular biology, and historical data to study species responses to environmental change.
Research areas include conservation biology, genetics, and the ecology of freshwater fishes such as Gila trout and Rio Grande silvery minnow. He has received notable awards, including the Gila Trout Distinguished Service Award and Endangered Species Recovery Champion Award. His work emphasizes conservation strategies, genetic monitoring, and habitat restoration in desert river ecosystems.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to understanding species’ resilience under climate change and human impacts. Key themes include genetic diversity management, trophic interactions, and the ecological effects of infrastructure like dams. His research also addresses challenges in endangered species recovery through innovative genetic and ecological tools.
